TITLE. BigEarth-Accurate and Scalable Processing of Big Data in Earth Observation Begum Demir

AUTHOR. Begüm Demir, Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento.

ABSTRACT. This talk will present the BigEarth project (Accurate and Scalable Processing of Big Data in Earth Observation) that is funded by the European Research Council (Starting Grant) for the period of 2018-2023.

BigEarth aims at developing a scalable and accurate Earth Observation (EO) image search and retrieval system for an accurate and fast discovery of crucial information for observing Earth from Big EO Archives. It is very important, since during the last decade a huge number of EO satellites with optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar sensors onboard have been launched and advances in satellite systems have increased the amount, variety and spatial/spectral resolution of EO data. This has led to massive EO data archives with huge amount of remote sensing (RS) images, from which retrieving useful information is challenging. In this talk, a general overview on scientific and practical problems related to RS image characterization, indexing and search from massive archives will be initially given. Then, the novel vision of BigEarth to overcome the existing critical problems will be introduced by focusing on its interdisciplinary nature among image processing, machine learning and remote sensing.

SPEAKER. Begüm Demir is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento, Italy and a member of Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSLab) at the same department. She received the B.S. degree in 2005, the M.Sc. degree in 2007, and the Ph.D. degree in 2010, all in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from Kocaeli University, Turkey. Her main research interests include image processing and machine learning with applications to remote sensing image analysis. In particular, she conducts research on remote sensing image classification, biophysical parameters estimation and content based remote sensing image retrieval. She has recently received an ERC Starting Grant with the project ‘BigEarth-Accurate and Scalable Processing of Big Data in Earth Observation’. Dr. Begüm Demir is a Scientific Committee member of the SPIE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing for Remote Sensing and she is the co-chair of Image and Signal Processing for Remote Sensing Workshop organized within the IEEE Conference on Signal Processing and Communications Applications since 2014. She is a referee for several journals (such as IEEE Proceedings; IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, International Journal of Remote Sensing), and several International Conferences.  She is a senior member of IEEE since 2016.
