Matthias Scholz is a trained computer scientist with a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and several years of experience in data analysis, network models and visualization in the fields of Metabolomics and Genomics. He has been working in plant and human Metabolomics where he successfully applied modern machine learning methods to identify marker compounds in metabolic profiles. In the last years, he worked in the field of Metagenomics, where he led the development of the software tool PanPhlAn, published in Nature Methods, that improves metagenomic profiling resolution up to strain level. In 2016 he joined to team of Kieran Tuohy to study how nutrients and other food components affect the human intestinal microbiota.
Complex diseases, disordered ecosystems or plant development are usually caused by multiple factors, or even by a dysfunction of the global interaction in microbial communities or molecule systems. Matthias Scholz is interested to study complex microbial related diseases, dynamics and regulation of specific pathways, the impact of nutrients on human microbial communities, and host-microbe interaction by integrating datasets from different omics platforms mainly Metabolomics and Metagenomics. His interest in data analysis techniques includes time series and nonlinear data analysis, complex networks and systems, independent component analysis and data visualization techniques in general.
