Dr. Garbeva's seminar
Mercoledì, 13 Febbraio 2019 dalle ore 09:00 alle ore 10:00
Room 6302 - PRC building
TITLE: Microbe-microbe and plant-microbe chemical communication
SPEAKER: Dr. Paolina Garbeva - Researcher - Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW)
ABSTRACT: Chemical interactions and communication contribute greatly to an ecosystem’s functioning and stability. Hence, the understanding of belowground inter-kingdom (bacteria, protists, fungi, plants) chemical interactions is crucial for assessing the functioning of a soil ecosystem. Plant- and microbe-derived compounds play an important role in belowground interactions, e.g. in signalling and interference competition. Both plants and microorganisms produce and secrete a wide variety of primary and secondary metabolites including volatile and non-volatile compounds. In my talk, I will present recent discovery of the ecological role of volatile compounds in long-distance belowground plant-microbe interactions as well as the effect of interactions on secondary metabolites production.
