Transcriptomics is the study of the complete set of RNA transcripts produced in one cell or in a population of cells under specific environmental conditions, using high-throughput methods based on microarray or next-generation sequencing technologies.
Over the last 15 years the analysis of gene expression data by microarray and RNA-Seq, available through public online databases, has allowed a great advance in the biological knowledge.In order to depict the global gene expression profile of a particular species the large and heterogenous information stored in these public repositories requires to be integrated in large-scale annotated compendia providing a more easy and organized access. In order to deal to this daunting task the proprietary technology COLOMBOS has been developed and used for study global gene expression profiles of bacterial model organisms (COLOMBOS) and more recently for Vitis vinifera (VESPUCCI).The activity of the Unit of Biological Computation is focused on the development and maintenance of the COLOMBOS technology for setting up and analize gene expression compendia (atlas, updating the collection of gene expression data, adding new analysis tools and ameliorate the interface for a better experience. Furthermore the Unit gives support to the researcher of CRI for both design and analysis of gene expression experiments from various technology (microarray, RNA-Seq, etc.).
