Research activity

Laura Costantini’s research activity is mainly focused on understanding the genetic bases of target traits in viticulture, with special emphasis on fruit and wine quality. The final objectives are both practical (development of molecular tools to assist breeding) and exploratory (identification of genomic regions, genes and alleles underlying trait variation). To this purpose she has been employing an integrated approach that includes linkage mapping, QTL mapping, gene expression analysis, target DNA sequencing along with plant phenotyping applied to segregating progenies, core collections and somatic variants from the FEM germplasm repository.

Research interests

Unraveling the genetic determination of:

  • Plant phenology and yield
  • Seed and berry development
  • Content and composition of primary (amino acids, amines) and secondary (flavonoids, aroma precursors) metabolites in the ripening berry
